Responsibilities and duties
The “Very Long Baseline Atom Interferometer“ facility (VLBAI) is one of three major research instruments at the “Hannover Institut für Technologie“ (HITec). Spanning across 10m free fall distance, our apparatus allows one to perform atom interferometry with rubidium and ytterbium with very large scale factors. In combination with exquisite control over systematic effects, e.g. caused by magnetic field gradients, as well as high performance seismic isolation, the facility will set a new state of the art in a variety of applications. Beyond tests of fundamental physics at the interface of quantum mechanics and general relativity, in the scope of CRC TerraQ we especially envisage operation as a higher-order reference gravimetry station.

The successful candidate will join our international research team and will be responsible for independent work on research project A02 Gravity Sensing with VLBAI towards the operation of a stationary gravimeter with unprecedented accuracy and instability comparable to that of superconducting gravimeters. To this end, the candidate will take part in the commissioning of the seismic isolation system as well as perform verification measurements using the rubidium atom interferometer.

Our research is embedding in numerous (inter)national collaborations. Within the scope of our work multiple state-of-the-art experimental methods and technologies (laser physics, high frequency technologies, analog and digital electronics, control engineering, programming, magnetic field design, etc.) are applied.

Employment conditions
To qualify for the position, applicants must hold a scientific university degree (Master, Diploma, or equivalent) in physics, photonics, or quantum engineering. Very good knowledge of quantum optics and atomic & molecular physics is beneficial and we expect interest/experience in analogue and digital control systems. We require very good written and spoken English, organisational skills, own initiative, and the ability and willingness to familiarize oneself with new areas of work.
