New article about multi-layer ion traps

Picture of the multi-layer ion trap before wire bonding. The trap is surrounded by a custom circuit board.

In our new article in Applied Physics B we present a multilayer surface electrode ion trap with embedded 3D microwave waveguide for the implementation of quantum logic entanglement gates.

We explain the simulation procedure that led to the trap design and characterization of the resulting microwave field pattern using a single ion as the local field probe. The experimental results agree with the simulations within the uncertainty. Compared to earlier traps, this design reduces interfering Zeeman shifts by three orders of magnitude. The design presented here can be seen as an entanglement gate device in a library of surface electrode ion traps for quantum logic operations.
