Spatial Modulation of Metal Organic Frameworks in Hollow Fibres

At HITec, we operate a complete production chain of specialty fibres and combine hollow-core fibres with solution-processed nanomaterials such as Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) with superparamagnetic cores. The local concentration of such nanomaterials can be manipulated using external magnetic fields. This effect can be used to induce local refractive index modifications. Filling these materials in hollow fibres opens up new applications such as tunable fibre Bragg gratings (FBG). We are searching for a talented candidate for a master thesis with a high interest in fibre optics and nanotechnology to perform an experimental study on the switchability in the fibre by polarization-resolved transmission, reflection, and deflection measurements. You will additively manufacture optofluidic interfaces in a 3D printer, microfluidically fill and seal fibres with MOF suspensions, verify the filling success with a specialty microscope, and perform the optical experiments.

Our offer:

  • Cutting-edge optical fibre production facilities and lab equipment
  • Close cooperation with the group inorganic solid state and materials chemistry at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry
  • A young and dynamic research group

Requirements:

  • Strong background in physics, nanotechnology, (polarization and fibre) optics, or comparable substantiated with respective grades
  • Interdisciplinary interests that cover e.g., nanotechnology, fibre optics, microfluidics, and additive manufacturing (Stereolithography)
  • First experiences in one or multiple of the above-mentioned fields are desirable.
  • Helpful: experience with electronics or programming with Python
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • High motivation
