in the innovation network
Innovative realization of an open organoid microscope and application transfer through e-learning (EasyOrganoid)
Duration: 01.09.2025 - 31.08.2028
The development of animal-free methods in biomedical research is of crucial importance. Organoid models mimic human tissue, but have so far only been used to a limited extent as replacement models. This is also reflected in public research funding, where only a very small proportion of the budget is allocated to animal-free alternative methods. Even in education, organoids are only discussed as a replacement method in a few cases.
The "EasyOrganoid" innovation network aims to close this gap by developing a cost-effective system for the incubation and imaging of organoids. Innovative e-learning modules are intended to facilitate the use of organoids in research and teaching. The information content achievable with the device is being researched in order to validate the methodology. In addition, innovative e-learning modules are being developed to investigate whether the dedicated "EasyOrganoid" device is suitable for teaching the necessary methodological skills for rapid and broad application with little establishment effort. In addition to Leibniz Universität Hannover as the network leader, the Hannover Medical School, Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts and the Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. are also involved in the network.
In its sub-project, LUH is researching the addition of a light field microscope to the system, which enables easy access to 3D information and can therefore be easily integrated into teaching. It is also involved in the biological validation of the "EasyOrganoid" device in organoid biology and its transfer to teaching.
